MANUAL WHEELCHAIRS

 

Manual wheelchairs are propelled by you or your caregiver. We can adapt a basic model to assist you in getting around your house or community.  We have a number of options, including lower height and lighter frames to make self-propelling easier.  We also customise heavy duty and extra-wide chairs, as well as ultra lightweight and folding chairs.  Seat and back cushions can be customised for any chair.  Our team will work with your physicians and therapists to determine just the right chair for your lifestyle.

CUSHIONS

 

We can supply customised wheelchair cushions made to work with your body. They are configured to protect your skin, maximise mobility, optimise posture and make day-to-day functioning easier. They also help keep you safe by dampening impact.

Troubleshoot Over the Phone
We strive to take care of you and when something goes wrong, we understand that you don’t want to wait a long period of time to be mobile again. That is why we do our best to troubleshoot your situation over the phone, and, if necessary, schedule you for the next available appointment at the branch. Initial Evaluation Appointment
During your initial evaluation appointment, a trained technician will thoroughly inspect your chair, consider parts availability and discuss any out-of-pocket costs with you. Common problems with arm pads, belts, tires, often can be repaired on the spot.

Funding Approval and Ordering Equipment
We strive to get your service or repair addressed during your initial evaluation appointment; however, there are situations in which a needed part may not be in inventory or the part requires a third party payer to approve the cost before we can perform the work.

Loaner or Temporary Equipment
At NMA, we are committed to providing our customers with customized, one-of-a-kind mobility products. However, we realize that while repair parts are being ordered, your chair may not be functional and you may not have a back-up to keep you mobile. When available, we can provide the appropriate rental and loaner equipment to support your independence. Our focus is to help keep you moving.

 

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

Keeping you mobile–that’s our primary goal. We take this goal very seriously. We offer an annual 20-point inspection of your chair because each component–from the simplest part to the most complex–plays a role in your comfort and safety. Day in and day out, each part gets lots of strenuous use and proper maintenance keeps your chair in top working order so it can always get you where you need to go.

If you purchased a chair from us, we will call you to schedule your annual 15-point inspection, but even if you didn’t purchase your chair from us you can call us to schedule your annual 15-point inspection. This inspection will help prevent significant issues which could result in a costly repair. The annual 15-point inspection includes:

  • Upholstery & Arm Pad: Check for cracks and wear

  • Armrests: Check, adjust

  • Seating System: Check brackets

  • Pneumatic Tires: Check tread and pressure

  • Solid Tires: Check for wear and tightness

  • Wheels: Spikes/mags

  • Hand Rims & Mounting Hardware

  • Wheel Locks: Check for tightness, function

  • Casters: Check for wear

  • Bearings: Check caster/stem condition and adjust

  • Front Riggings: Check footplates, heel loops

  • Frame: Check side frame, cross braces, side posts

  • Tips and Grips: Check for wear

  • Cables: Check for visible wear

  • General: Ensure that the chair operates properly in all directions/modes

 

HOME BASIC MAINTENANCE

These simple maintenance tips can be done at home and will help keep your chair in good working order.

  • Check axles, sleeves, bearings, and related components every six months to confirm they are tight and in safe operation. Ensure components that are designed to be removed easily or move freely are working as intended and free of debris build-up (e.g. hair, lint, etc.

  • Check the brakes (also known as wheel locks) weekly on a level surface. When checking your brakes/wheel locks consider if they are too loose or too tight to operate effectively and easily, if they are effectively stopping the chair from moving, and whether they are easy to lock and unlock.

  • Keep all surfaces clean and free from foreign substances, such as mud, dirt, food, drink, etc.

  • Check inflatable tire pressure weekly and maintain tire pressure as shown on sidewall. Also, be sure to check tire tread for wear.

 

SAFETY TIPS

  • Approach any unknown path, door, drop-off or raised surface with caution before proceeding.

  • Avoid any surface, interior or exterior, when unsure of chair stability.

  • Do not attempt to enter a vehicle unassisted.

  • Observe chair weight limits. Never lean, reach or bend while seated or take friends for rides.

  • On inclines, keep chair moving slow and steady. Avoid sudden starts and stops.

  • Make safety checks on your chair’s tires.

  • Read your owner’s manual before using your chair for the first time as it includes critical information to ensure your chair meets your expectations.

  • To avoid tipping over, avoid high speeds and sudden movements when turning corners.
